task 1
From the questionnaire that I made I gathered various
information, I am able to make report from it. I made a very generic
questionnaire for people to answer. From the first two questions I gathered
that most of the people that answered where the age between 18 -19 with a
percentage 54.5, this correlates to what’s your gender as it got the same
percentage of 54.5 which is in favour of males. And I got the same percentage
for people’s occupation which is mostly student. From the gaming question, it
was mixed because it was it was multiple choice but the majority of the vote
went to ps4 with a percentage of 72.7. From looking at this it’s more of a
man’s world when it comes to video gaming. Meaning that because of the results
that I got I can clearly see that the younger generation, mainly boys answered
and that they are all up to date with the latest software and consoles, with
nearly all of those who did answer they said they had every console that was
listed. Those who answered gave a very mixed variation of what they’re into.
The majority of the answered resulted in the categories of sport and other with
the same percentage of 27.3. This is followed by survival and first person
shooter that is also popular with those answered and got 18.2 percent for both
options. What was most interesting was the answers that I received for a
certain question, which is ‘what are your top three games and what console are
they on’ and the two that kept coming up the most out of the top three were,
NBA 2K, COD and GTA and these all were resulted on PS4 which came up the most.
This tells me that these are some of the most popular games that commonly
played by people of the younger generation. This leads directly to my next
question, and I found that roughly in a day from most of those that answered, said
that they play for around 3 – 4 hours in a day and they prefer to play on their
own, which is why they would play for so long. Most of the games that people
put as their top three were shooting games so this is why 81.8 percent of them
said yes to playing shooting games. And it isn’t shocking when 63.6 percent of
them said yes to if it brings out their violent side. From this I can see that
this is more of a boy’s world and why they get frustrated easily when they
don’t win. But some fell into denial as 36.4 percent of them said yes and the
same amount of percent said no when asked if they throw a tantrum.
Even though my questionnaire is very generic, it has some
questions that apply to come things like the hypodermic needle theory. Meaning that
how these games are portrayed in the trailer and what they are actually like in
the game, has an actual massive effect on those who play who do play these
types of games, such as it gives young people a different way of thinking and
acting when it comes to these violent games and can possibly affect them when
they’re not playing these games. Games such as uncharted 4, gta and others can
make people be seen as passive because the media has injected people into thinking
what they have to and what other people have told them to do. This is because there is no other way of getting
information. And these is very cleaver on the game makers behalf because they
know that once they make one game like this, they know people are going to come
back and get the next set of games that they bring out as young people can't
resist the thrill of violent games.
Those, which is everyone, is
passive. They chose to play games like uncharted 4, and have accepted the
violence, the sexual content and the strong language that comes with it and has
had no second thoughts about it. They primarily saw the graphics and the
storyline that goes with it, which is why they ended up playing/downloading the
game.
Participatory is basically those who have taken the time to
do my survey and giving me primary results. There’s also those who take part in
the gaming participatory, meaning that they will plays the games maybe online
or just on their own and have friends join them.
With the uses and gratification theory, it tells you about
most but different people and why they choose to take in different types of
media. This is because the media caters for different people and it makes it
easier for them to see what they like and what they're into, especially with
games, and this can easily be seen by a simple advert which can determine if
you're going to like it or not because of the content.
The creators of these games were
very smart like I said before, when it comes to effects of advertising. They
know what the audiences likes and that is very powerful. When you see the
adverts for these games, they basically show you the good parts of the games,
which in this case for uncharted 4 they show the storyline of when he was
younger till now when he's older. It also includes some violence, and shooting
parts. This draws people in into getting the game and they're also smart
in the way of where they've placed the advert, meaning it can be seen on tv,
YouTube, public transport so there's no way of people getting away from it.
People who like to play video
games are fully aware of what they are playing and what they are portraying but
that doesn't matter to them because they think it's just a game but they are
fully aware of what it's showing. These types of people are put down in the
category of oppositional.

website report
Task 1 – media products & their audiences
For this task I have picked my chosen website which is Lasula.co.uk, and with this I made a
questionnaire for people to answer about the simple details of the website.
From the answers I have received I am able to make a report from it.
Lasula is a website
that is aimed at women and sells nothing relating to men. Their audience is a
range between 15 – 29. As a whole most of the people who answered my survey are
18 – 19 with a percentage of 50, 10% were 16 – 17 and 40% were 20+. This gives
me the impression that most of the people that answered are in the younger
generation. This relates to what gender those are from who answered it. Most of
those who did were female with a 66.7% majority of the percentage, and a 33.3%
of males that’s answered. From this and looking at the website it’s understandable
why the majority of the results are female rather than male.
The occupation question resulted in favour of student with a
percentage of 50, compared to full time job that got a percentage of 30 and
part time job that got a percentage of 20. With this comes with those who have
visited the website before. What I got from peoples first impressions, were very
mixed. Lasula has a very simple
layout to their website and is very to navigate, this is due to their drop
downs as they have everything you will need to find what you are looking for. On
their layout they have several things on there, such as photos that they have
taken to show their products off to entice you to buy it but they also have photos
that everyday people, (mostly bloggers) have taken with their product on. From those
who looked at the website, 70% of them said that the website was easy to
navigate. This left 30% of those saying that it was normal, okay and good to
navigate.
In terms of the features, most people said the logo which
was majority of the answers. This is because it’s the first thing you see and
it stands out on the website even with a simple font design and colour. Most of
the people liked the website, in terms of the layout, colours, font’s menus,
ect, most of them said they liked the features on the website. 70% of people thought
that the written text (narrative) on the website were entertaining, 20% of
those thought it was unclear and the remaining 10% thought it was informative. Most
of the audience said they would recommend the site to others with a 80% majority
and only 20% of those said they wouldn’t recommend it to others.

task 1 - website
symbolic - this website has a few different symbolic things on the website like, the logo and the images that they use throughout the whole website. The logo itself sounds very feminine, and all the images on the website portray women young models.
Mode of address – the mode of address for this website just screams out, young, fun and girly to the audience. For this there are different aspects of mode of address. Such as this website has some informal text to it. This is because it’s aimed at young people and it makes it more approachable to the younger generation and because it sounds like them so it draws them in more when they come across it on the screen whether it’s the front page or wherever.
Another way they attract the younger generation and how they
also cater to them is by putting different discount codes on the website that
can be applied to different products on the site and they also do holiday and
seasonal discount codes, it also warns those of when they’re going to end as
well. This is also their way of showing who their audience is, by the way the
website looks, some of the language that they have used. This is because all of
their audience is young and they know that the older generation would shop on
their website because of the type of products that they sell such as the style.
Another type of mode of address is, direct mode of address,
this is where they have included the audience in the website, such as the ‘instashop’,
this is where they’re audience has bought their clothing and tagged them on it
though Instagram and this is their way of showing of peoples Instagram accounts
and even help them sell they’re products.

Audience theory
The hypodermic needle is a theory about audiences , the theory implies that the media has
a powerful effect on its audience, so it influences how it's audience think and
feel by simply following instructions
and doing as they are told. The hypodermic theory believe that their audience
are passive. Quinten Tarantino directed , produced and edited Django unchained the way he wanted
it to be told ,so that the audience
received the film the way he intended for it, also the way he manipulated it by
the script , locations he used , the western theme , the shots that way the
audience receive the film how he intended it to. The audience learnt about
slavery , plantations and history about the slave trade in the way he made the
set. So actively the viewers picked to watch Django unchained but passively
the audience didn’t know what was going to happen or how the story was going to
be told. So they've passively viewed it. The hypodermic needle theory is like a
big syringe that Quinten Tarantino has packed with everything he has put in
there for the audience to receive and has injected the right amount of what he
wants us to see. Quinten Tarantino was very smart when planning the film and it
was very successful.
In terms of Rush Hour the audience was
active because they intended to watch the film because the audience knew that
it was going to be a comedy.
The uses and gratification theory
explain why people consume different types of media and what they gain from the
information given. From our survey statistic's and focus group it is shown that
41.7% our audience watched Django
unchained by choice and 58.3% did not watch the film by choice but they ended
up enjoying the film. In terms of our audience who watched the film Django
unchained by choice , they watched the film for their own entertainment ,. The
other 58% that did not watch the film by choice had no choice because it was
for educational purposes so they had to. Which relates to the Harrold Lasswell
theory. Harrold believes that people use the media for their own entertainment
just as our audience did. Harrold Lasswell also believes that people use the
media for correlation , so for example if they have watched a particular drama soaps
which liked ,they will begin to watch different drama soaps because of the
experience they gained .In this case most of our audience also watched Django
Unchained because of who directed the
film. The director was Quintin Tarantino. Many of our audience are
Tarantino fans and they enjoy his movies so they put their trust in him to
watch this film because they know that they would enjoy it. Another reason why
our target audience watched Django Unchained was because of the main character
Jamie Foxx , who played Django.
As for Rush hour the audience also liked
the film , they really enjoyed it and found it funny. Thed decided to watch the
film by choice because they like the actors such as Jackie Chan and Chris
Tucker. The audience said if Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker were not the main
stars in Rush hour they would have not watched or have enjoyed the film as
much.
The reception theory is a theory
that studies how audiences receive and interpret the media that they have
consumed. Stuart Hall has created this idea for media and communication
studies. This theory has two parts encoding and decoding. Our consumers are a
encoding audience , because they have consumed the message that the film makers
want to get to people. By doing this the film makers have made the film about
slavery knowing that most of their target audience would be black. They have also included many historical facts into the film
that the audience did not know about before watching the film. The film was
also created for educational purposes , to teach the audience more about the
slave trade and how slaves were treated. For example the hot box our
audience from our focus group mentioned that they did not know what a
hot box was before watching the film. Many slaves were kept in the hot box as a
form of punishment. The film makers used emotional scenes so they can encode
their message to their target audience. The audience were also preferred , they
understood the messages within the film and agreed with it. The audience gave a great reception to the
film because the film was targeted at people who like western films and people
who like historical films. And because the film was based on slavery it gave a
great reception to the black community. Everyone's opinions were about the
same, because that is the reaction Quinten Tarantino was looking for and he
made sure to produce a product like that.
For Rush hour the audience received the
film really well , they learnt about the history of china and Kung Fu.

Audience profiling
Effects of exposure to explicit sexual or violent content.
For our primary research, our focus group shows us that none of the explicit content that we listed such as, racial comments, sexual scenes, blood violence and others effected those in the class who watched the film because that it what made the film interesting. And it’s known because it was directed by Quentin Tarantino, and that is his style of movies. With the responses for Rush hour, there was not a lot of explicit content shown through the film. This did not affect our audience. As the movie was more comedy based and classified at a suitable age.
Effects of advertising
Through our primary research, our audience answered the questions by saying they watched the trailer which made them interested to watch it. The feedback we received also revealed the use of through online and posters which influenced them to watch the film. Another reason why the advertising affected our focus group to watch the movie was also because of the use, of the popular actors such as Jamie Fox, being a known actor, attracted them to also be interested to watch. Rush hour had an effective advertisement due to the use of online trailers, and billboards. As well as the exposure of two famous actors involved which our feedback showed drawn them to watch the movie.
Health concerns
The responses also indicate even though the film there was no health concerns that affected our audience. Rush hour also didn’t have any effect on health or negative effects towards the audience.
Censorship debates
As Django contained a lot of explicit content and violent scenes, it has been classified by the government with an age range. As our focus group learned that the use of exposure t the scenes can cause a negative effective. Django being rated an 18 film was debated due to the negative effects it could have on a younger viewer.
With Rush hour, the censorship debate classified it as a 15 film. Our audience preferred Rush hour more due to it having less explicit content viewed. And being more family friendly if younger viewers were able to watch.
Responses
Overall the response we received from Django showed that 100% enjoyed watching Django, as 50% of our group liked action films. This indicates a positive response towards the film. Our feedback also shows that Quentin Tarantino films are also enjoyable for the audience, as the use western and action was emerged to create the movie. The responses we received from rush hour were also positive as, the actors in the film engaged our focus group to be interested to watch it. Another reason for this was also because the genre action comedy was a popular response we received.
Negotiated
In django due to the story behind it, showcasing the story of slavery, the audience negotiated by also saying the negative impact towards the film was the use f violence and the plot twist involved. Bringing a western genre in the film as well which makes the film entertaining to watch, rather than educational. With rush hour being a comedy there were no negotiation through our response , as although it was a crime action, the use of funny and mild adult humour involved made it suitable for the type of movie.

evaluation - final production day - 8/2/17
On this day we did our last run through and a little while after we did our final shoot with a live audience so we could get honest feed back for our show. From how it went, I think it went very well as we didn't have a lot of time to rehearse and even when we did there was a lot of problems, either people weren't in or some people who were filling in didn't make much effort that made it more harder for us and it made the process even longer.
what went well even before the production of the show was the process of pre planning, as we split the task 1 tasks so we could all make an effort and get things done faster. What made it even better is that all knew what we were doing, so it speeded things up even more. after task 1 was done, we shared everything on Google drive so we were all able to get all the work and post it on our blogs. we decided what we were going to be doing for the final product and I was given the role of lighting, so I had to know all the timings of when I should turn them off, dim them and even bring them back up.
after all that, and went it came down to the production as a group we had more negatives than positives throughout the whole thing even though we were the ones who had everything ready and were more organised when it came to preproduction. we were missing a lot of things such as our live performers as we were going to have them in our show, they only came in for about two rehearsals and the for the final thing, which were in charge by two members of the group. so without them there we had to improvise and fill in the gap with those who filled in for us.
even though the final thing went well, it was a good and bad experience as we learnt different things about the multi-cam world and how hard it actually in a studio. we also were taught how the visual mixer works and how it operated within the multi-cam and how it helps with the smooth running of an multi-cam production

today we had another run through of 'we are London' as always with our group there were issues but this one was a lot better than yesterdays by far. yet it took ages top set up as people weren't there, didn't help to set up or even people from the other group didn't want to help set up which then made things even longer, and then we were trying to figure out what was going on so we could get started. what it needed to make it more successful was, people need to be on time to do their job, if they were late we cant help that but people fully not turning up and not even telling us was a big big issues for the group. what i discovered when doing a run through was that it was so much stress that wasn't even necessary and i also found that as much as we needed the rehearsals, it was such a waste of time, nothing went to plan.

30/1/17
Today was supposed to be social challenges day to perform there production but as Danielle wasn't in today, tom took over and we had the choice whether we wanted to watch a film or have a run though of one of the shows and we decided to have a run through of 'we are London' because we haven't had enough run through's of our show and it was complete shambles, the time it took to set up, me, Tim, dianni, veera and zain were all ready and knew what we were doing but there were some difficulties, meaning some of our members were late but that was okay because we could work around that and they eventually came in and got their job done. However, people were complaining, finding it difficult with the script and not putting effort into the run through, so half way through we started the show again and then it messed up again so we just carried on and then finished.

24/1/17
At the beginning social challenge ended up setting up for their production and i ended up being a guest as usual for there game show, as for the games all are stuff was pre recorded so we did not have to do it again.
Half way through the lesson we swapped over and i took my role of lighting operator and we had a guest come in to be on our show, the first thing i did was making sure the lights were how we wanted them , the only problem we had was that the sound person was very late with the sounds, Other than that some other things need to be fixed up but other than we should be ready for next week. Also we will set up the instrumentals for the guest to rap or sing over.

23/1/17
today was a change of plan as we did change our rehearsal days last week but we ended up rehearsing for our group today because we felt like that we haven't had any rehearsal time and social challenge have a lot of run through's compared to us. we had a lot of stuff that got in the way of our rehearsal time but luckily we were able to have a run through, I personally think it went well for our first go, the acting did go on a bit and did get a bit boring, because they didn't really know when the breaks were but they knew what the subject they were meant to be talking about, but there was a time where they did go for an ad break.

17/1/17
we did another run through of social challenge and this one went really well, even though things were a bit slow in the beginning but after that everything went to plan for them, even with some adjustments that they need, like timing, the lights, who's doing what and communicating better. for me as one of their contestants on the show, it went well, but was confused on some things like went the lights went off for a bit and their last part of the show could have been organised better for the 'dub challenge' with having old photos of ourselves and a current one, it could have been done better.
16/1/17
Monday was pretty much a failure, we didn't get to rehearse or anything, we had all the equipment and everything was set up but the people in our group stopped production because they either wasn't in or they were late so we wasn't able to do anything but go over what we were doing individually, like me, dianni and tim, we were talking to each other and co-ordinating with each other on our job roles.

Today we did another run through of "Social Challenge".
They were more prepared this week, providing audio for their show and having the correct documents on set. The run through went well. even though it took them awhile to get started and having some difficulties with the lights and the sound that they were using.

Today we solidified our production roles and familiarised ourselves with the software, Reco Live. We did this in a classroom as the TV studio was unavailable. We also spent the time updating our blogs and ensuring that all the relevant information was on there.

Today we did a run through of "Social Challenge". Some of us from the other team, "We are London", participated as contestants on their gameshow.
Social Challenge ran into a few issues. They were unprepared and didn't bring the correct documents such as the shooting script, resulting in their camera operators being unsure of what to do, what shots to film and when to cut between different cameras.
